A small but very quality-oriented red wine scene has developed especially around Deutsch-Schützen and Eisenberg, which benefit greatly from the area's characterful and iron-rich clay and basalt soils. What should be highlighted is the special microclimate on the Eisenberg, a basin open to the southeast that fully absorbs the countless hours of sunshine. The name reveals the heavy, iron-rich soils that give Blaufränkisch, the main grape variety, a finesse, mineral note. The result is original, independent and idiosyncratic wines with great resources that reflect the location, soil and climate.
FURTHER INFORMATION:

The majority of the vineyards stand on loose, mostly silty, but also sandy or gravelly, young lake and river deposits of the Styrian Basin, which merges into the Pannonian Basin to the east. Not only are they very variable in grain size, but also in the carbonate content of limestone and dolomite components. In the northern and central part of the wine-growing region, the vines are rooted on different solid rocks from the Mesozoic and Prehistoric eras. These include lime phyllites, green slates and serpentinites from the geological unit of the Alps called Penninic. Rocks similar to those in the Rechnitz area and on the Eisenberg also form Austria's highest peak, the Grossglockner.
Especially in Deutsch Schützen and Eisenberg, heavy, iron-rich clay mixes with the mineral rock. Depending on the location, this combination creates exciting flavor variations and represents the uniqueness of our region.
Single-vineyard wines are preceded by the term “Ried,” which means “vineyard” in Austrian. This means the consumer can immediately recognize single-vineyard wines. Single vineyard wines are usually made from first-class vineyards. Such a vineyard theoretically produces a wine that requires no help. The soil, the microclimate, the sunlight, the access to water... everything is perfectly balanced and makes these locations worthy of having their own name on the label. Sometimes this is a risk. If the weather conditions are not so good, there is a possibility that the wine will not be as good as it should be, so our winery only offers the following single-vineyard wines in the vintages where everything is perfect:
Ried Weinberg
Ried Fasching
Ried Saybritz
